Salt Ayre Bistro opened in the tiny gem of a space once occupied by Gertrude’s at 7309 Ventnor Ave. in Ventnor. The beautiful new sign out front is very impressive and sure to catch the eye, I love the compass. The eatery is decorated with a coastal vibe, pale gray and white brick wall with striking black and white photographs of seaside architecture. The staff were at once very friendly and helpful. We learned that they were the owners son and wife. The owner is the chef and opened their new restaurant for his sons. They came from another local, LoBianco in Margate, where Salts’ owner was a chef. Did you follow that?

Nicole’s 10, which opened in 2007 in Randolph, offers casual dining in an upscale atmosphere. The restaurant is located in an unassuming shopping center in Morris County and wows guests with its welcoming vibe as they walk in. The space is warm and comfortable without feeling formal. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and its ingredients and can make solid recommendations to diners overwhelmed by all the tempting options.

Everybody has probably seen the infamous map of New Jersey that made its way around the internet this past month. Whether or not the map is accurate, the divisions in our Garden State are undeniably fascinating. We have our coastal shore towns, full metros like Newark and Atlantic City, farmland to the west, the Historic sites of Princeton and Morristown, and then there’s Sussex County. I think that map does not characterize our northernmost county accurately. With its open fields, horse shows, and hunting enthusiasts, its become apparent to me that Sussex is the land of the North Jersey Cowboy. Sussex County is our Texas.

The little town of Metuchen is only four square miles, but Main Street is home to a number of excellent restaurants. This summer, it seemed like overnight that the well-respected Indian restaurant Spice Melange was replaced with another Asian bistro, Red Monk. Now in its fourth month, Red Monk is still perennially packed on both weekends and weeknights, and it’s easy to see why.

I was treated to a fantastic dining experience during my recent lunch at FireCreek Restaurant and Bar which opened in early November 2011 at Voorhees Town Center, South Jersey’s all new shopping and dining destination. FireCreek brings an option for fine dining featuring New American cuisine to this Voorhees neighborhood and surrounding communities.

As we gaily (or sometimes frantically) shop our way through the holiday season, it is sometimes difficult to determine what to get for the wine lover in your life. Sure, there is the obvious (wine). But there are only so many wine carriers, rabbit ear openers, decanters and wine stoppers that one person can accumulate. Here’s another idea: a book about wine or wine regions. One of the best that I have read is Natalie MacLean’s new book: Unquenchable: A Tipsy Quest for the World’s Best Bargain Wines.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at a brand new restaurant in Long Branch called Ciao Ristorante. We made reservations for their first official Saturday night and went in expecting to give them some slack on what I was sure was going to be less than perfect service, presentation, and taste as most restaurants need some time to get their acts together. Well, Chef Marc Marotta and his team require absolutely no slack. We commented several times over the course of the night that the restaurant seems like its been open for years.

We recently had the pleasure of experiencing a new addition to the many fine Nanking restaurants throughout the Tri-State area. Spectacularly showcased amidst polished marble, brass Buddha statues and rich, red lighting, the restaurant shines like a jewel in the crown on the sixth floor of Bally’s in Atlantic City.

Last month, our executive editor Deborah Smith passed along an invitation to an intimate press dinner at the Liberty House in Jersey City that I jumped at the chance to cover. You may remember my post last year about their Mac ‘n’ Cheese Meltdown (which they may be bringing back, fingers crossed!), and ever since then, the restaurant has been on my radar for unique American comfort food cuisine with one of the most spectacular atmospheres on the Hudson.
