Yesterday was the perfect day to be among over 100 beer and beef loving friends at Bar A in Lake Como for the Great Jersey Shore Burger Contest. I, along with Peter Genovese from The Star Ledger and Munch Mobile fame, Randy Davis from Thunder 106 Rockin’ Country and Brian Durand of Shore Point Distributing shared the daunting task of picking a winner from eleven restaurants who truly brought their best. Every burger had something outstanding to offer. There wasn’t a bad bite in the bunch.

Living at the Jersey Shore, it’s easy to get tired of pizza and cheesesteaks. Alumni Grill in Wildwood takes traditional American cuisine and subjects it to amazing twists and transformations to create an innovative menu that keeps me counting down all winter for opening day. While their menu is packed with flavorful, interesting sandwiches, wraps and burgers, there’s one in particular that’s like nothing I’ve ever had before: The Jekyll & Hyde Cheesesteak.

It looks pretty unassuming (shown here on a wrap so I can tell myself it’s healthy), but wait until you take a bite. It’s 1/2 beef and 1/2 chicken steak with savory bits of bacon tossed in, melted provolone cheese and “special Jekyll Sauce” that makes this cheesesteak unforgettable if not addictive. I’m always full after one half, but it’s so delicious I can’t stop taking bites.

This weekend was the first weekend of Jersey Shore Restaurant Week and we did it up in style. The kickoff party at the Wonderbar in Asbury Park was a huge success. Surf Taco, the Windmill and Jersey Mikes gave away a ton of good food and we danced the night away to Brian Kirk and the Jerks. Saturday was Burgers, Bloodies and Brews at three locations on the shore: Harpoon Willy’s in Manasquan, The Lake House in Loch Arbor and The Draughting Table in Bradley Beach. The pictures you see here are from our visit to Harpoon Willy’s.
