Morristown’s New Tomato Pie– A Double-Bite Review

The Tomato Pie with spinach and mushrooms

Deanna: You say tomato, I say … tomato! We may be from two different counties, but we speak the same language when it comes to food. A recent visit to Morristown’s new Tomato Pie found two Jersey Biters in delicious harmony over a Grandma Pie and a nice plate of rice balls.

Lauren: A NYTimes review of Tomato Pie in Morristown had my attention immediately. Thin crust pizza is my favorite, and I’ll find any excuse to return to Morris County. Growing up in Mendham, we didn’t have any good pizza nearby, but the families who live there now will love this place. I called up my fellow Jersey Bites Morris County Regional Editor, Deanna Quinones, who covers Morristown, to see if she had been to Tomato Pie yet. An email exchange evolved into lunch plans, and the “she said/she said” dual restaurant review was born.

Jersey Long Hots for this Scorching Summer

When trying to cook in season some of the hardiest riders on the produce truck are peppers. One of my personal favorites with an exceptionally long growing season, March to about September or perhaps October with this year’s weather, are long hots. They are a great addition to any dinner but beware. While they don’t have the guaranteed heat of their capsaicin filled brethren the habaneros or heaven forbid Scotch Bonnets, long hots are (in the paraphrased words of Forrest Gump) like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.

A Budget Friendly and Delicious Italian Dinner

It’s been a very long time since I have followed a recipe to the letter, but when the recipe comes from America’s Test Kitchen, I don’t feel the need to mess with things on the first try.  This past Saturday as I tried in vain to burn a few calories on the treadmill, I watched their Italian Comfort Classics episode from beginning to end. And, consequently, hopped off the treadmill and headed to Shoprite.  (Hopping off the treadmill and grocery shopping burns calories folks, I promise. )

Easy Grilled Pizza with Caramelized Onion and Goat Cheese

When I find a new product that I am happy about, you know I like to share it with my favorite people (that’s you of course.) So, while speeding through Foodtown the other day, I spotted this new pizza bread that looked interesting. ready made pizza crust It is made by International Fabulous Flats™ and Foodtown had it in both the white and multigrain varieties.  I chose the multigrain as you can see and hurried home to experiment with toppings.  (Yes, and take a picture of it too. Don’t you take pictures of your groceries?)

Chicken, Spinach & Butternut Squash Lasagna

I know it sounds crazy, but trust me when I tell you, you have to make this one! This is one of the tastiest lasagnas you’ll ever eat and its fairly healthy. I used cottage cheese instead of Ricotta (first time for me) and went pretty conservative with the Mozzarella.

Pasta alla Puttanesca

Pasta is a rare treat for me these days. My kids actually can’t stand pasta unless its Kraft Mac and Cheese. I know, its a shameful admission, believe me. I blame it on the fact that we do not have one speck of Italian blood on either side of the family. My Grandfather wouldn’t even allow garlic in the house. Now that’s just sacrilege even to a non-Italian like me.
