Ramsey Food Notes

There are some good things going on for foodies in Ramsey, most notably the rash of new restaurants recently opened and my favorite indoor farmers market.  The Ramsey Farmers Market open Sundays from 10am-2pm at the Eric Smith School at 73 Monroe Street is a treasure trove of organic vendors and locally sourced produce, cheese, meat, honey, breads, confections, coffee, tea, eggs, baked goods, jams and preserves, pickles, body care products and more.

Giamarese Farm in East Brunswick Named Vegetable Grower of the Year

The Vegetable Growers Association of New Jersey honored Jim and Sue Giamarese of Giamarese Farm in East Brunswick as Vegetable Grower of the Year, presenting them with their award on January 18 at the New Jersey State Agricultural Convention in Atlantic City.  The Giamarese family has been farming in East Brunswick since the 1930’s.  The farm now consists of more than 100 acres and includes: a retail market where the Giamareses sell their produce; pick-your-own strawberries, peaches, apples and pumpkins; bedding plants; choose and cut Christmas trees; and wholesale sales at the Tri-County Cooperative Auction Market in Hightstown.

Jersey Long Hots for this Scorching Summer

When trying to cook in season some of the hardiest riders on the produce truck are peppers. One of my personal favorites with an exceptionally long growing season, March to about September or perhaps October with this year’s weather, are long hots. They are a great addition to any dinner but beware. While they don’t have the guaranteed heat of their capsaicin filled brethren the habaneros or heaven forbid Scotch Bonnets, long hots are (in the paraphrased words of Forrest Gump) like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.

Freshness Abounds at Red Bank Farmers Market

‘Tis the season for all things fresh in New Jersey. There’s no better place to find the best local goodies than at the Red Bank Farmers Market. A trip to a farmer’s market on a sunny morning is an activity that is perfect for any age. The liveliness of the atmosphere and abundance of fresh products create an experience that is more than simply shopping: it is an experience of celebration and joy within the community and nature to which we belong.
