Robert Sliwowski aka Bobby Chez is well known in South Jersey for his delicious crab cakes as well as his earlier days as the chef/owner of Chez Robert restaurant in its’ three different locations from 1976 until 1995. Chez Robert was a landmark French restaurant “back in the day” as they say nowadays. People still talk about the amazing seafood bar and consistently scrumptious entrees he served. After the closing of Chez Robert, Bobby decided to reinvent his talent in 1997 using his fathers’ crab cake recipe and his mothers’ help into what again became a new landmark in the food business, Bobby Chez Seafood Specialties in Voorhees. Today his business and commissary is located in the Tuscany Marketplace shopping center in Cherry Hill.

The New Jersey Agricultural Society awarded Betsey Cook and David Hodges of the Collingswood Farmers Market the Tony Russo Farmers Marketing Award, for excellence in promoting New Jersey’s agricultural products on January 18, during the New Jersey State Agricultural Convention in Atlantic City. The market first opened in 2000 as a project of the civic group Proud Neighbors of Collingswood to bring local farm products to the area. It is now a project of the Borough of Collingswood and boasts more than 20 farmer/grower-related participants each season, as well as many other vendors.

I was treated to a fantastic dining experience during my recent lunch at FireCreek Restaurant and Bar which opened in early November 2011 at Voorhees Town Center, South Jersey’s all new shopping and dining destination. FireCreek brings an option for fine dining featuring New American cuisine to this Voorhees neighborhood and surrounding communities.

For the past couple of years, we’ve enjoyed locally grown New Jersey produce and other local products at the annual Farm to Fork restaurant event sponsored by South Jersey Hot Chefs. Held each summer, the event provides participating chefs in the Burlington, Camden and Gloucester county areas to strut their culinary stuff and showcase local food producers at the same time. The South Jersey Hot Chefs website lists the participating restaurant, so you can peruse menus through links to the websites of member restaurants. Dinners are priced at either $35 or $25, and typically include 3, 4 or even 5 courses. Many of the locations are BYOB, so you can tote along your favorite wine, too,

When trying to cook in season some of the hardiest riders on the produce truck are peppers. One of my personal favorites with an exceptionally long growing season, March to about September or perhaps October with this year’s weather, are long hots. They are a great addition to any dinner but beware. While they don’t have the guaranteed heat of their capsaicin filled brethren the habaneros or heaven forbid Scotch Bonnets, long hots are (in the paraphrased words of Forrest Gump) like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.

On a recent Friday night, we met 6 of our friends for a family style meal at Hong Kong Fusion in Cherry Hill. We thought it would be a fun place for a group outing-if you order a little of this and a little of that, you can work your way through different parts of the menu pretty easily. I learned that share-sies are the way to go when I worked near Chinatown in New York City. I was blessed to have a colleague whose family owned a Chinese restaurant. She knew the best places to go and the best things to order, so we always dined family style and let her pick the food.

The Riversharks took their first win of the 2011 season on Tuesday night in a victory over the Long Island Ducks. Two home runs by the home team weren’t the only big plays at the home opener as Kuzina Express hit one out of the park in the concession’s debut. While a smaller ballpark, Campbell’s Field has a certain majestic quality that reveals itself after you climb the stairs to the main concourse and the landing opens to the bright green diamond and massive Ben Franklin Bridge backdrop. Walking down the right side of the concessions–past the Bud Light Dugout where the sponsor drink is $1 on Tuesdays–you’ll find the franchise’s newest addition.
