When you end up at a diner you don’t know, you never know what you’re gonna get. I know there’s a Yogi Berra’ism in there somewhere but the unknown can be a risky thing when it comes to diners. Lucky for you, I’m a risk taker. Sometimes, you get the greatest family owned place with a unique menu and a feel good atmosphere that leaves you full and smiling. Other times, you end up at a dingy truck stop, and you leave feeling, well, down right dingy. All in all, its a relief when you take a chance on a place and end up at a stand-up New Jersey Diner. Morristown Diner is a reliable classic. Its not particularly remarkable, but its certainly not a bad way to get your burger fix. »» New Jersey Nick’s Pick: The Morristown Diner

My name is New Jersey Nick, and I’ve been scouring the Garden State looking for all the best Good Food That’s Bad For You; Burgers, Fries, Dogs, Burritos, and anything else that you need to jog off the next day. No fancy places for me. Just burger joints, diners and haunts favored by adventurous eaters and carnivores alike. I find the best places, and I hope you go give them a shot. This week, I check out the burgers at the Time to Eat Diner in Somerville. »» New Jersey Nick’s Pick: Time to Eat Diner in Somerville

When trying to cook in season some of the hardiest riders on the produce truck are peppers. One of my personal favorites with an exceptionally long growing season, March to about September or perhaps October with this year’s weather, are long hots. They are a great addition to any dinner but beware. While they don’t have the guaranteed heat of their capsaicin filled brethren the habaneros or heaven forbid Scotch Bonnets, long hots are (in the paraphrased words of Forrest Gump) like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.

I have to confess it took me 45 years to tackle the tomatillo only to find out that they are really very easy to work with. I don’t know why I was so intimitated by those little green tomato looking things with the wrinkled, papery skin, but I am no longer afraid. Actually, now I’m addicted. The original recipe for this salsa comes from Marcela Valladolid‘s Fresh Mexico Cookbook. I met Marcela and took home her cookbook after a Food Network sponsored house party last year. It’s taken me this long to post about it, unfortunately, especially since I now have a new favorite condiment.

Jersey eaters, what I am about to say may shock you, but once you hear my reasons, it won’t sound so crazy. Here it goes… You must go to Philadelphia for brunch. To be specific, you must go to Lacroix, located inside The Rittenhouse Hotel in the city of brotherly love. Here’s why:

This is probably the busiest pie-making week of the year and if you’ve got a lot of pie scraps lying around, don’t throw them away! Pie fries are a much tastier alternative. They’re easy, delicious and make a creative dessert or a sweet appetizer for the nibblers in your family.
