New Jersey’s Best Burgers
So, when I put the call out to my followers on Twitter asking where I might find the best burgers in New Jersey, I got an instant and impassioned reply to my query. As I am beginning to understand, the “best burger” is subject to personal opinion and I don’t want to start a raging debate here, so I decided to ask fellow Food Blogger and “Internet Food Discussion Pioneer,” Jason Perlow, for his opinion on what makes a great restaurant burger. Perlow pointed me to an interview he did for A Hamburger Today (I told you there were websites dedicated to this stuff) in which he describes the perfect burger. “I think all preparations are equally valid because there are different genres of burgers. At a summer cookout, a backyard burger formed by hand has to be grilled. The classic fast-food or diner burger has to be griddled, and the steakhouse or pub burger needs to be broiled. But each of these burgers has to have a different meat composition, fat makeup, and quantity of meat for each to work under the right circumstances.” Another very passionate patty connoisseur is Tommy from TommyEats.com. Tommy has his own ideas of what makes for a great burger. “A great burger needs freshly ground meat (this can’t be stressed enough), salted (stressed again), with enough fat content to lend flavor and juiciness, a good (or preferably, great) bun, an appropriate meat-to-bun ratio, a patty that’s not too small or too big (6-7 ounces seems to be the size where most excellent burgers hover)…and that’s it. You can dress a burger up with cheese or smoked pork products, which will just about always elevate a substandard burger to edible levels, but a great burger doesn’t need the supporting cast (although they don’t hurt). Remember: everything you put between the bun, and including the bun, should *matter*.” Tommy has been on his own burger crusade here in New Jersey. You can find a whole list of places he has tried and written about on his blog. His personal picks? South City Prime in Little Falls and Copeland in Morristown. In regard to the latter, Tommy added, “they’ve been hit-or-miss…but when they hit, they hit hard.” I decided that it might be nice to map out the best burger joints for your traveling pleasure. (Can I tell you how impressed I am with myself for figuring out how to do this?) View Larger Map Where Diners are concerned, I kept hearing one name over and over; White Manna in White Manna as seen in daylight. Photo by “Daniel”, eG Forums And somewhere in between the franchises, diners and the gourmet restaurant lie the pubs and steakhouses, my personal favorite. I don’t indulge in burgers much, so when I do, I like to have the whole experience; a warm cozy environment, a nice glass of wine, and a perfectly cooked burger with blue cheese and saute onions, maybe even some mushrooms on a toasted bun. There are a few places that come to mind and mentioned as favorites in the pub category. Barnacle Bill’s in Rumson is one. I spent many a Sunday in my twenties chowing down on Barnacle burgers. It’s a rustic, salty place with a nice view of the Navesink river. Another pub with a water view and a cozy fireplace is Harpoon Willys in Manasquan. Both places flame broil their burgers behind the bar. This has been a fun and slightly fattening post to write (you’ll read my review of Boom in Belmar in the next few days). I am sure we have missed a few favorite places, which I will happily add to our map. I look forward to your comments on your favorite burger spot or on what you consider the key ingredient to the perfect burger. 17 Responses “New Jersey’s Best Burgers”Trackbacks/Pingbacks

Nice write-up! I agree it’s “subject to personal opinion” as well. Told you one, but have another:
Sun Tavern in Fanwood, NJ
Mantoloking Pub (aka Mr. P) in Mantoloking, or it might be Brick, just over bridge.
The White Manna burgers are good. I like 5 Guys too but both are a little on the greasy side. When I have a craving and don’t care about calories, they taste great.
Ah, interesting, never heard of the Mantoloking Pub called Mr. P. It’s known by us clam diggers as the MRP. But, never tried their burgers, how funny. They are definitely a well kept secret. They have a Tuna BLT, with fresh tuna cooked the way you like (rare). Never expect it from a place like that. I’ll have to try their burgers. Thanks.
@Studio Fitness, Sun Tavern is on the list already. I think you suggested that one to me originally.
Great post and I’m impressed with your map too. Nice! I’ve always wanted to try White Manna … must do so soon!
White Diamond in Clark…the large cheese served on a hard seeded roll…the best.
White Manna is really really good. We waited in a long line on a cold drizzly day to eat there – and it was worth it. – John
What about us burger lovers in South Jersey? I’m feeling a little left out, here.
IF you want a fantastic, quick, simple burger i’d recommend JD’s Grill on Station Avenue in Haddon Heights (right up by the intersection of Station with WhiteHorsePike/rt30)
There’s hardly any seating, cuz it used to be a tiny little chinese takeout joint, but there’s a few stools at the counter, and the whole place has a fantastic Retro feel.
all the burgers are put on a freshly baked brioche from Le Bus bakery, and the fixins are fresh.
Central & South Jersey, you have to try out the burgers at Kairo Kafe, not the sliders but their full adult size burger.
Morezzi’s in Trenton near Howell street, ask for the 16 oz italian monster, It’s huge, It’s delicious, and sooo juicy…..definitely worth a try……
Great List! White Mana is my husband’s favorite. He loves those little greasy burgers.
I love the Iron Horse for the their stuffed Burgers.
The Butler Family Diner on main street in Bulter has great stuffed burgers too. They are not only tasty but very big Burgers.
Went to The Fireplace today, it was Ok. Nothing special, decent burger, overdone dried out fries. Back home in Detroit, we’re got a dozen better cheap burger places.
Next up, White Manna.
I have to say, White Mana is the Rolls Royce of burgers.
Their Frys are good too!!
You are all missing the boat. Do yourselves a favor and go to Rossi’s Tavern in Trenton. http://www.rossiburger.com/ I do not know what they put in it or how they cook them but they are spectacular! I love a lot of burgers but nothing comes close to a rossiburger!
Listen to Billy D, no place in central or south jersey makes a better burger than Rossi’s Tavern. Its a 35-40 minute drive from our house and we take the kids at least a half dozen times a year. The chips, mushrooms and chicken tenders are outstanding also. I have been going there for 10+ years now and they are consistently great.
The Globe Burger @ The Globe in Red Bank or my other fav is The Pour House in Shrewsbury.
